The goals of this workshop are to:
- To build a cadre of skilled social justice interpreters in the Southeast and Appalachia who can empower immigrant communities by providing language accessibility to promote social justice
- To encourage local leadership in immigrant communities through sharing skills by training other community members in social justice interpreting
- To create multilingual spaces in social justice communities where language is used democratically as a movement-building tool of power
WHO THIS IS FOR: Bilingual social justice activists and workers who would like to learn more about interpreting and translating in a social justice context to empower immigrant communities and build alliances across communities.

- Interpreter Role and Ethics
- Interpretation modes
- Use of interpreting equipment
- Differences and similarities in social justice interpreting
- Impact of language barriers in social justice movement building
- How to create a multilingual space
Hands-on interpreting by participants throughout the workshop
Please Note: Participants should be able to commit to the entire program schedule (Friday 9 am through Sunday 4 pm).
Registration and Cancellation Policies
Wayside is committed to providing a quality workshop experience for every participant. This requires a certain level of advance planning in order to have the right team of educators, the proper amount of food and ample notice of participant cancellations so that we can invite the next person on the waiting list in order to have to right number and mix of people.
When your application to participate in a Wayside workshop is accepted, we will hold your space for one week to give you time to pay your registration fee by check, money order, or online through our secure server. If we have not received your payment after one week, we will attempt to contact you one more time before offering that space to the next person on the list.
Cancellations are fully refundable up to three weeks before the start date of the workshop.
Cancellations made less than three weeks before the start date of the workshop are refundable at 75%. Cancellations made less than one week before the start date of the workshop are refundable at 50%. Cancellations made less than three days before the start of the workshop are non-refundable.
Exceptions to this policy in the case of emergencies are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Sliding Scale and Scholarship Policy
Scholarships are given based on our commitment to the growth of a base of activists, organizers and interpreters who are connected and are committed to building power locally and regionally. We prioritize scholarships to individuals living/working in the US South whose leadership and will contribute to a more just world and powerful movement for radical social change. Scholarships are prioritized for those who are of and/or connected deeply to communities directly affected by the issues their social change work seeks to address . Participants connected directly to Wayside and our work are also prioritized.
Sliding Fee Scales
Wayside is committed to making our workshops accessible to people of all income levels. Fundraising suggestions and support are available if the fees listed are burdensome. For individuals considering where they fit on the scale, we recognize that the incomes listed look different for different people based on life circumstances and we ask that you take look at your income, obligations and capacity before making your selection and contribute according to your means. For example, if your income is $25,000 and you are a single parent living in an area with high housing costs, then you might consider registering at the next lower tier. If your income is $25,000 and you are a single person living in affordable group housing, then you might consider registering at the next higher tier.
