Some members of the Wayside Immigrant Youth Group left a recent Bring It! Youth Organizer Skills Weekend fired up and ready take on an ambitious educational project about the effects of detention and deportation on working families and society as a whole. During the coming months, they spent a lot of time together developing their analysis of the complex reasons people are forced to migrate to this country and the current anti-immigrant political climate. With the help of independent filmmaker Jen Lawhorne, who loaned equipment and guided them in their process, the youth produced a short video dramatization of an immigration raid in a home, handling every aspect of production from writing the script, directing filming and editing to performing the original spoken word soundtrack. The powerfully moving educational tool that resulted has been featured at such venues at The Virginia People's Assembly and the statewide gathering of The Virginia Immigrant People's Coalition.
